Autumn song

W&N watercolour on Bockingford 300gsm

Know’st thou not at the fall of the leaf
How the heart feels a languid grief
Laid on it for a covering,
And how sleep seems a goodly thing
In Autumn at the fall of the leaf?

 W&N watercolour on Bockingfo9rd 300gsm

At this time of year I really enjoy the silhouettes of the trees and hedges against the summer sky.

Bluegum view

W&N watercolour on Bockingford 300gsm

The Tarlton landscape (Gauteng, South Africa) is dominated by eucalyptus trees, which were originally brought here from Australia for the mining industry. A third of our smallholding is covered in an old blue gum plantation and provided me with an endless supply of sketching matter. This is the view from just outside our property fence.

Short-cut through Spring Farm

Small W&N watercolour in Moleskine 200gsm sketch-book

Often, when I go to Magaliesburg (Gauteng, South Africa), I take this short-cut through Spring Farm past the little dam. It’s a gravel road, forcing one to travel slower and take in the scenery and I often have tortoises, hedgehogs, guinea fowl and small buck crossing my path. I much prefer it to the quicker route along the main tar road.

A farm gate

W&N watercolour and ink sketch on Bockingford 300gsm

I just cannot drive or walk past a farm gate or fence without stopping to photograph or sketch it! And I'm especially partial to barbed wire fences! This is a farm gate on a friend’s smallholding in Tarlton (Gauteng, South Africa)

Sunrise over a winter landscape

W&N watercolour on Bockingford 300gsm

Winter here in Tarlton (Gauteng, South Africa) means a late sunrise, often accompanied by clouds, which usually clear up as the day progresses.

“Nature is painting for us,
day after day,
pictures of infinite beauty
if only we have the eyes to see them.”
— John Ruskin

Hard to believe

W&N watercolour on Bockingford 300gsm

Winter on our smallholding (Tarlton, Gauteng, South Africa)

It’s hard to believe that in a few weeks’ time the grass on our smallholding will be green and these trees once again thick with foliage…

View across the road

W&N watercolour on DalerRowney 220gsm heavy-duty sketching paper - unframed

I open my eyes and see the world in a new light. I view everything as if I were a child seeing a freshly opened flower for the first time.

The view across the road from my studio – I stare at this every day, and every day I am amazed at the different play of colours on the landscape….
